Erin Howell

Erin Howell is a dual-degree DVM & MPVM student with an interest in preventing viral zoonotic disease outbreaks. She obtained her B.A. in neuroscience from Reed College in her hometown of Portland, OR, in 2018. Prior to vet school Erin was a
laboratory technician, a wildlife rehabilitation volunteer, and a
small-animal veterinary assistant. She enjoyed working in multiple sectors of animal care and has experience with several species, including various rodents, fish, birds, cats, and dogs. Erin is very passionate about studying the links between human, animal, environmental, and plant health. During her first summer in vet school Erin traveled to Tanzania with Dr. Brian Bird’s lab to study the prevalence of Rift Valley fever virus in cattle. She had a blast collaborating with an international research team, performing laboratory assays, and visiting field sites. After returning to the U.S., she decided to pursue the MPVM degree so that she could further integrate her laboratory and clinical veterinary skills in preventive medicine.
