MPVM graduate nominated as USDA undersecretary of food safety
The US Department of Agriculture has nominated UC Davis Master in Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) graduate Dr. Jose Emilio Esteban for the position of undersecretary for food safety.
Esteban, a veterinarian who trained at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, has two degrees from UC Davis, an MPVM and a Ph.D. in epidemiology.
MPVM Program Builds Knowledge and Connections
When Dr. Tapakorn Chamchoy began looking into programs that would give him solid training in statistical analysis and diagnostic test evaluation, he couldn’t imagine that would involve visiting California dairy farms to obtain fecal slurry samples. But that’s where his Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) degree took him.
Congratulations to the summer MPVM student presenters who have submitted and defended their research projects! Dr. Deepak with advisors Terry W. Lehenbauer and Sharif Aly presented “Risk factors and pathogens associated with bovine respiratory disease in pre-weaned dairy calves”. He has already returned to India and is working in Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department of the Government of India. Dr. Ruwini Kaushalya Rupasinghe, advised by Woutrina Smith and Danielle Harvey, presented “The effects of environmental enrichment with Acalypha indica plant and olfactory receptor gene variability on behavior of adult domestic cats in Sri Lanka”. She now begins her PhD at UC Davis in the Graduate Group in Epidemiology. Dr. Andrew Di Salvo, with Beatriz Martinez-Lopez and Mike Ziccardi and co-authors Brandon Munk, Alexander Heeren, Nicholas Shirkey, & Brett Furnas from California Department of Fish and Wildlife, gave a talk entitled “A semi-quantitative risk assessment of the introduction and exposure of chronic wasting disease to California cervids”. He is off to serve as a Wildlife Veterinarian with the Bureau of Land Management, Pennsylvania Game Commission. Congratulations to all three!
The American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine has some new UC Davis alumni coming in as diplomates. Drs. Muzafar Makhdoomi, Tara Urbano, Kathleen O'Hara, and Padraig Lucey have all just passed their epidemiology board exams. Congratulations to you all!!
MPVM is a proud sponsor of GEOVET 2019.

Congratulations on our newest alumnus, Tapakorn Chamchoy who presented his research in late May, 2019 entitled “Environmental sampling to assess the bio-burden of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis on drylot pens on California dairies”. Tapakorn’s advisors were Drs. Sharif Aly, Deniece Willimans, and John Adaska at our Tulare facility. We’re excited to announce that Tapakorn will be returning to work with the government of Thailand now that he has completed his MPVM.
