Jane Riner is from the southeast US but is most at home in California. She attended UCD for her B.S. in Animal Biology, then veterinary school, and now she is back for another 3 years of residency and the MPVM! She has worked in emergency and exotic animal medicine in San Diego, CA and as an associate zoo vet at an AZA-accredited facility in Oregon. She is currently a second year Free-Ranging Wildlife Health Resident with UC Davis Wildlife Health Center and the CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife. Her job involves disease surveillance and population health monitoring in wild animals (think HPAI in wild birds and mammals, canine distemper outbreaks in foxes and raccoons, rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus in endangered brush rabbits, and more). The MPVM provides key skills for this career path, providing a strong foundation in applied epidemiology and statistics to investigate and address wildlife health issues. She has a soft spot for carnivore and mesocarnivore health (where she started over 10 years ago and the focus of her current research projects) but she is excited about anything from plants to insects to elephants. When not working, she likes hiking, bouldering, or exploring for good food then coming home to her 3 dogs and cat.
